Match report SHORT-HANDED. BEATEN. RELEGATED.

A nine-wicket defeat 30 miles from home - fielding six senior cricketers, three juniors and a player's father among a 10-man side - adequately sums up the shambles that has been Leverstock Green's Chess Valley Sunday League campaign this summer.

And you will have to believe this correspondent when he says it has not been for the want of trying.

This Sunday's availability typified the embarrassment, with 11 becoming nine thanks to two late drop-outs and then eight on matchday when another player simply didn't show up.

There are those that have played as often as possible, thanks to a deep love for the game or a respect for this club which has seen them play even when it would be far more convenient not to do so.

Cheap promises made at pre-season meetings about availability have largely gone unfulfilled. Any surprise? No, not really.

The only pity of it is that there are some junior players who gain valuable experience on a Sunday playing on some decent wickets - but only if surrounded by the comfort of senior players to guide and encourage.

The good run in the Herts County Cup only served to highlight that people can make themselves available when it suits. No chance they'd have played on those weekends if it had been 'only a League match'.

Thanks to those folk who did take up arms in the good name of the club on Sunday. This fixture perhaps went further to show that the whole Chess Valley League format needs a good re-think, both in terms of format and geography.

That is not to excuse those at LGCC who could have helped the cause much more.

It is time to seriously consider how the club views its Sunday cricket - and, frankly, answer the question as to whether there should be Sunday cricket at all.

Once again, thank you to everyone who has played some part in fulfilling the Chess Valley League fixture schedule.
