Match report LEVERSTOCK GREEN fell just short of bringing up the remarkable feat of winning both midweek cup competitions in the same summer after West Herts won The Watford Observer Fourteen14 Shield with an over to spare at Chipperfield Clarendon CC.

Green went into the game as underdogs and that feeling was even stronger after they posted an under-par 92, losing their tenth wicket with three balls of the innings going to waste, and that with several dropped catches from the opposition.

But a sterling effort with the ball and in the field pegged the Stags' run chase back - thanks to key wickets interspersed throughout an innnings during which not one wide or no ball was delivered (surely an LGCC first in this competition).

The only batsman to score more than 20 on the night provided the match-winning knock. West Herts' Craig Sanders emerged as their hero, striding in at number eight when the game had just turned in Levy's favour, to smack 26 not out from just eight deliveries.

It brought up a ninth WO Shield win for the Stags, denying Green a first-ever triumph in this competition after a side showing just two changes from four days previously took that confidence and belief from the Heath Park Cup Final victory into this match.

Sol Tomlinson picked up the key wicket of all-rounder Will Jones, while a superb low catch by Sam Revell off Majid Khan sent Matt Smith back to the pavilion for only 15.

Tomlinson, Khan and Lewis Koch all took two wickets apiece and went for an average of one-a-ball from their six eight-ball overs.

But Sanders took a liking to Darren James, who conceded 20 from his final over, the 13th of the innings, to finally seal the deal for West Herts.
