HERTS LEAGUE ROUND-UP - WEEK 11: ROBERTS' SIX-FOR WINS THRILLER FOR 3S ON UNBEATEN SATURDAY

18 Jul 2016

SAM 'RETRO' ROBERTS returned match-winning bowling figures of 6-30 to help bring up a welcome third win of the summer for Levy Green 3s - and this away at Division 9B leaders Mill Hill Village II.

It was a thrilling victory, since the 3rd XI had to defend just 109 all out, with only Stuart Evans and Karl Turner registering a score of 20 or more.

But defend it they did, thanks in the main to Roberts' six-wicket haul which included three LBW decisions - the final one given very sportingly by the Mill Hill playing umpires when the opposition required just three runs to win.

JAMIE WALLIS led from the front for Levy 2s as they chased down Hatfield & Crusaders' 151 all out; the skipper's 42 at the top of the innings breaking the back of the run chase.

Luke Weston struck a patient 30 while Abbas Ali saw Green home with 24 not out and a diminishing number of partners available as Levy got home seven wickets down.

Earlier in the day, the wickets were shared around among Green's seamers with Jillani Ghulam's 3-44 from a full 15-over spell the pick of the attack as the 2s maintained their grip on second place in Division 5A.

LEVY 1st XI were left frustrated by Broxbourne who blocked out for a draw at The Green, having been set 242 for victory by their hosts.

Sixty-six from Kyle Claxton, Lewis Koch's 45 and a brisk 31 not out by Dave Tyson all contributed to Green's target score of 241-6, run up in 52 overs.

But Broxbourne were in no mood for a serious run chase and closed on 148-8 from their 48 overs back, despite the best efforts of skipper Dayle Littlejohn (4-41) with the ball.

BERKHAMSTED IV's 175-8 proved 16 runs too many for Green 4s to chase during a game which ended in a draw.

Naran Jagatia's 3-27 from his 12-over spell - backed up by two wickets apiece from skipper Greg Coulshed and Dave Cardy - ensured Berko's target was never going to be unattainable.

But opener Mike Parkes, who scored 50, lost partners too regularly to fashion a serious assault on the target score. Matt Gardner's 22 and 21 from Harry Sturgess were next best as Levy closed on 159-8.
