FIVE-STAR WEEKEND FOR GREEN: Four Promotions Still Possible As Season Heads For Final Fortnight

21 Aug 2017

WHAT a final fortnight of the 2017 season it promises to be for LGCC, with four of the club's five senior teams still gunning for promotion.

All five Levy teams recorded victories across the August 19th & 20th weekend, and this means that - aside from the Saturday 3s, who have gone a long way to securing their divisional status with a win - all of the other four sides are bidding for an elevation in status.

The flagship 1st XI have the chance to create club history by earning promotion to the Saracens Herts Premier Cricket League Championship, should they take maximum points from Saturday's trip to Old Albanian and a final-day home game against Kings Langley.

This follows a fine home win over neighbours Hemel Town, who posted just short of 200. In reply, Lewis Koch's 60 kicked Green's reply into life while 40 not out from Sam Revell, ably supported by club legend Dave Tyson, saw the hosts home by a five-wicket margin.

Meanwhile, two wins from the final two games will almost certainly seal promotion from Division 5A for the 2nd XI, given their current third placing with top-of-the-table St. Albans II visiting The Green this weekend.

Captain Imran Iqbal's 77, supported in fine style by the returning Ben Goode (38), allowed Levy to amass 229 at Preston II. Goode's four wickets and some tight bowling elsewhere left Preston 20 runs short in the 50/50 run chase.

The 4th XI now have promotion from Regional Division C West in their own hands with just one game remaining now (due to the way the fixtures have worked out) this Saturday.

Dave Cardy's magnificent 6-20 helped restrict Hatch End II to 153, before Kaleem Saleem (33) and Ian Wallis (31 not out) helped guide the 4s to a three-wicket triumph.

Meanwhile on Sundays, LGCC & SAWICC now occupy one of the top three promotion slots in Chess Valley League Division Three after a pair of 60s - from Sol Tomlinson and Nahim Iqbal - proved pivotal in securing a run-rate win over Parkfield & Headstone after rain washed out the game's climax.

Miles Barnard took 6-69 as P&H's Ali Khan blasted a 35-ball ton in helping his team to post 272 all out, however Iqbal's unbeaten knock had LGCC & SAWICC just ahead of the required run-rate when the game was abandoned after 33 overs of the reply with the score at 210.

The Sunday side must now win at Harpenden on September 3 to secure a second successive promotion.
