HERTS LEAGUE ROUND-UP - WEEK 18: Ups & Downs As 1st XI Crowned Champions While 2s Slip Into Relegation Zone; 3s & 4s Secure Mid-Table Finishes

05 Sep 2015

THE final day of the 2015 Saracens Herts League season saw Leverstock Green's 1st XI beat Old Owens to make certain of the Division 2A title - having already secured promotion the previous week.

And the crown was secured by club legend Dave Tyson who hit a six over square leg to take Green's score past 185 - the total needed to earn the six bonus points required to make sure of the divisional gong.

A final Levy target of 219 - thanks in the main to a classy 56 not out from Ajit Kumar and Kris Jadeja's 48 - proved 75 runs too many for hosts Old Owens.

Majid Khan's 5-32 took his seasonal league haul of wickets to 33, while seam partner Adam Thomas clocked up 40 dismissals for the campaign with 2-38 to help remove Owens for 144 and seal promotion to Division One for the first time since the 20-team Division 2 championship-winning summer of 2008.

IF joy was the emotion for the 1s, it was despair in equal measure for the 2nd XI who ended the season second-from-bottom in Division 4B and therefore relegated to Division 5A.

Green 2s hadn't been in the relegation spots all summer but their fall from mid-table security was dramatic throughout August. The side recorded just one of its five wins in total after the end of June.

A familiar tale - not enough runs - ensued at The Green on Saturday. Asked to bat in bowler-friendly conditions, Levy crawled to 115 all out from nearly 45 overs against champions-elect Sandridge.

That the top contribution was 27 extras is telling. Levy repaid the compliment to the visitors, though, bowling 27 wides as Sandridge wrapped up victory - and the Division 4B title - for the loss of just one wicket.

Skipper Jamie Wallis, who has done a fine job in testing circumstances following last year's promotion, has already vowed to lead the team back to Division 4B at the first time of asking in 2016.

GARETH TUCKER signed off his sterling service of recent years as 3rd XI skipper with a last-ball defeat - although those on the field at Knebworth Park IV were left with a different idea of what the result should have been.

Graham Evans can be pleased with yet another patient and valuable contribution at the top of the Levy order, 65 this time, as the 3s reached 142-8 from a rain-reduced 45 overs.

Several economical contributions with the ball from Green meant that Knebworth found themselves at 142 with one ball remaining. Strong appeals for a run-out from the game's last delivery weren't upheld, however, meaning the already-relegated hosts were able to record a two-wicket win.

Levy 3s finished mid-table after a solid if unspectacular season's cricket.

TWO dismissals for junior Arslaan Saleem and Jay Odedra's wicket were the bowling highlights for LGCC 4s who ended the summer with a five-wicket win over Boxmoor IV at Parmiter's.

Boxmoor lost just four wickets during their 45 overs, but were only able to set Green a target of 121 for victory.

After a few early scares, avoided by opener Andy Welch (21), Mark Pearson (30) and Derrick Sheldon (34) came together for an unbeaten sixth-wicket stand to win the game and see Green 4s to a comfortable mid-table finish in Regional Division C West.
