Old Owens v Leverstock Green Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 05 Sep 2015 at 12.30pm
Leverstock Green Cricket Club Won by 75 runs
Match report
Highlights: Ajit Kumar 56*, Kris Jadeja 48; Majid Khan 5-32.
A tough looking fixture was negotiated in style as Leverstock Green romped home to take the Herts League Division 2A title. After 2 tough battles with Old Owens earlier in the season in league and cup, both sides knew they would be in for a battle, with Owens still in with a sniff of promotion. Old Owens won the toss and asked LGCC to bat first on a pitch left very wet by the rain earlier in the week. Miles Barnard and Lewis Koch started well before Barnard was caught behind the ball after smiting Javed Mir for a big maximum. Kyle Claxton and Koch took the score to 50 without great alarm before 2 wickets fell in consecutive overs as first Claxton was caught by Raj off Ahmed for 0 and then Koch caught by Ahmed off Raj for an a punchy 34 of 37 deliveries. Kris Jadeja, as so often this season, was fluent and aggressive in making 48 from 56 balls with 7 x 4 and 1 x 6, and he was given good support by Dayle Littlejohn. Their partnership of 63 was ended with Littlejohn falling for 13 to off spinner Sibley, caught by Bloxham. Again, 1 brought 2, and Jadeja followed 3 overs later for 48. LGCC were 124/5, well short of the 200 they needed to guarantee the title. With Old Owens spinners bowling very well, Ajit Kumar and Mark Landau looked to reconstruct. Kumar wasn't his most destructive self, but played his finest innings for the LGCC 1st XI (perhaps until the following day!) as he was judicious in his strokeplay, respecting the good balls and dealing with anything off line or length. Kumar and Landau put on 41 before the latter fell to the returning seam of Bloxham. Club legend Dave Tyson joined Kumar, and their partnership garnered another 40, as sixes began to rain down. It fell to Tyson to crash the six that took LGCC past 200, to 7 batting points, and to the title, to mild panedm. He fell for an entertaining 24 trying to repeat the dose, leaving Kumar to finish the innings with a 6 and a 4. His unbeaten 56 came off 65 balls and contained 4 x 4 and 4 x 6. Leverstock Green finished on 219/6, in the conditions a well above par score.
It looked a case of after the Lord Mayors Show for a while in the field for Leverstock Green, with Old Owens getting away to an aggressive start, rushing to 25 in the 4th over before Adam Thomas claimed the prize wicket of opener Ralph Lane for 12, bowling him with a cutter. Majid Khan then trapped Ahmed in front for 11 in the following over. Tom Moody and Chris Palmer batted well to rebuild the innings but with the score on 75 Moody picked out Kris Jadeja at mid on, to fall for 18. Palmer and Javed Mir again rebuilt and kept Old Owens in the chase, before a clatter of wickets rushed LGCC through to the finish line. Littlejohn brought back his openers in search of wickets and Majid Khan duly delivered. Palmer found Jadeja at mid on having made 53, and Mir nicked his old university friend through to Kyle Claxton for 17. Thomas bowled Dawson-Goody, then Khan picked up Rimaaz and Lumb in consecutive balls, to get his 5-fer. Ajit Kumar wrapped up the tail, Raj providing a third outfield catch for Jadeja, before he bowled Bloxham to start the celebrations.
