Match report AN unsatisfactorily short cricket season (albeit for reasons understood and respected) for our eldest junior age group came to a close in St. Albans yesterday evening with a narrow 18-run defeat to the hosts.

Such has been the pronounced development of some of the players involved that they are now beginning - or, dare I say, are regulars - within the adult 4th XI scene on weekends.

I've no doubt their progress will serve to inspire others who are pushing forward to make a case for senior inclusion.

This game, however, served to highlight the fact that there is still development required, since 16 wides were bowled - yielding 32 runs which, ultimately, proved decisive when it came to Green falling short in the run chase after St Albans posted 117.

Their total was largely the work of an unbeaten 53-run ninth-wicket stand after Levy had held catches and enjoyed some good fortune with unkind ricochets onto stumps to reduce the home team to 63-8 at one point.

Salman Saleem (two wickets) bowled with his usual control, as did fellow opener Arjun Odedra - who later hit a splendid 27 not out as he and Gez Yates (13 not out) chased the target in vain.

Tom Rumble picked up two dismissals, one of which with his first ball, while George Sharman has bowled better and got no wickets than he did in taking two victims while skippering the side.

Levy's solid ground fielding and general enthusiasm was a welcome presence on a sunny Bank Holiday evening, however they couldn't round off what proved to be a just a four-game programme with victory.

Thoughts have already turned to next summer and the creation of an Under-17 team to give continued development time to those moving above the Under-15 age group next year.

Thanks to all parents for their continued support in terms of transport and ground set-up / take-down at The Green.
