Match report A SUN-SOAKED September Cricket Week was brought to a close by a terrific Sunday where past and present players mingled both on and off the field of play, with families very much to the fore.

The decision to even have a Cricket Week at all during this Covid-constrained summer of cricket seemed fully justified as the sun beat down on The Green and temperatures soared into the mid-20s for the fifth consecutive day of the annual LGCC event, delayed from its usual end-of-July staple slot.

Kevin Eaton brought together a team of ex-LGCC players and the 'visitors' opted to field first without the need for a coin to be tossed. An unusual choice for Cricket Week, but the former players came within 11 runs of justifying their decision to put LGCC's current players in first.

Club Captain Richard Walker assembled a team of the longest-serving present players available; a strong mix of experience and still some 20-somethings who've been around the scene for over a decade. An honorary addition was made in the form of 15-year-old 1st XI starlet Seggery jnr to keep wicket - Cole, son of LGCC legend Kevin.

LGCC's batting order was drawn from an old cap, and threw tail-ender Adam Thomas in at the top of the order with his long-suffering 1s skipper and teammate Dayle Littlejohn.

The pair put on over 50 before Dayle was caught by President's son David Coulshed off the bowling of Kings Langley FC midfield maestro Jordan Parkes.

Thomas went on to retire undefeated on 54, bringing the in-form Luke 'Spaghetti' Weston to the crease.

Weston plundered another unbeaten half-century, looking as comfortable as he's done all summer with bat in hand.

Stuart Evans came and went quickly, triggered by umpire Dave Tyson off the bowling of XLG skipper Eaton.

Nick Merrett suffered the relative ignominy of being bowled by groundsman Craig Ringsell, while Walker succumbed to a 'Chicken Jaffa' - a spicy dish which involved a ball pitching on middle and hitting the off stump bail.

Eaton also cleaned up Tom Callingham as LGCC posted 166-5 from their allotted 30 overs, leaving young Cole without a knock after unluckily pulling out the No. 11 slot from the draw.

Opening seamers Kevin Brett and Jordan were the pick of the XLG bowling, each with parsimonious figures from their six-over salvos.

In reply, Coulshed looked in good touch for his 24 before missing a straight one from Walker for a case of 'Touche', as XLG kept up with the run-rate albeit at the cost of regular wickets.

Jamie Wallis trapped Gareth Tucker lbw before Walker did the same to Fleming before Weston took a sharp catch in the gully to remove Ben Somerset.

'Father' Chris Dowling had compiled 14 before he was unluckily run out. Walker, while bowling, attempted a spectacular one-handed return catch off Jordan Parkes but the ball fell out of his grasp directly onto the non-striker's stumps leaving the backing-up Dowling well short of his ground.

J Parkes it was who provided the batting highlights for XLG, looking like he'd played every week of the summer in making a stylish 40 before Thomas removed what would have been the match-winning contributor.

Kevins Brett and Eaton scored briskly for 19 and 16 respectively as XLG continued to threaten the target but, after both had been bowled by Littlejohn - who also gave a severe examination of Dylan Rance's defensive technique, it was the unlikely left-arm slow-medium of Weston that took the game's final wicket; that of Mike Parkes, leg before wicket (probably trying to cut the ball).

A game played in great spirits, with plenty to discuss after the game about not just this strange summer but decades of LGCC action before that.

As children availed of the entertainment provided - 'Foot Pool' & 'Giddy-Up Horses' amongst the fun - XLG men sat long into the evening, reminiscing and enjoying what was probably a long-overdue visit to The Green for many of them.

Promises were made all round that this could be inked in as an annual fixture, perhaps creating a new 'Cricket Week Sunday' tradition.

It was a wonderful day, befitting of a wonderful club.
