Northchurch v Leverstock Green Cricket Club Under 15 XI on Wed 16 Jun 2021 at 6.00pm
Leverstock Green Cricket Club Lost by 4 runs

Match report LGCC's Under-15s went down by a margin of just four runs at the end of a thrilling game against a good-natured Northchurch side at their picturesque The Meadow ground on a warm summer's evening.

There's a balance to be struck between sensible batting - seeing off good deliveries - and taking calculated risks for singles and other scores during an innings. And it's something both the Under-15s and Under-14s, half-a-dozen of which are the same players anyway, are wrestling with right now as their teenage cricket development continues with one eye on senior inclusion at weekends.

Having bowled and fielded really very well having won the toss and customarily elected to field first, taking key wickets early on and then continuing good disciplines to get the hosts all out for 97, Green struggled to establish any momentum at all with the bat during the early overs of the run chase.

Six from 23 balls faced and 10 from 30 are examples of batters protecting their wicket well but not being able to convert those dots into precious singles. Frustratingly, therefore, it was just a handful of runs which separated the two teams at the end of the game.

Lewis Cooper took 3-18 from his three overs and Khizar Hayat claimed two dismissals, however the pick of the bowlers was left-arm seamer George Sharman who is developing into a very difficult proposition for opening batsman with his late inswing accounting for one of Church's top two.

Ben Humphreys was very tidy behind the stumps with his night including two catches, while captain Harry Walker's field placements looked sound before he took the inning's last wicket.

In reply, a studios 10 from Humphreys was complemented by a more dashing 18 by Sharman as they threatened to get the scoreboard ticking, but with six overs remaining 48 more runs were still required - such was the slow progress of run gathering earlier on.

Khizar Hayat used his idiosyncratic bat to great effect to smoke a couple of boundaries and keep LGCC in the hunt, but despite the best efforts of Salman Saleem and Cooper the Green ended up just short of their target.

Now on to the return fixture when LGCC host Northchurch this Sunday afternoon.
