Leverstock Green Cricket Club Under 14 XI v Wheathampstead on Thu 17 Jun 2021 at 6.00pm
Leverstock Green Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
LGCC Under-14s put Tuesday's poor batting display at Harpenden behind them to record a four-wicket win at the end of another exciting match - this time dodging the sporadic showers at home to Wheathampstead.
Lewis Cooper's unbeaten 30 was the clear highlight of a run chase which, as opposed to Tuesday's snail-like start and clatter of wciekts, always kept up with the run rate.
Callum Pillay hit a fine 18 before getting carried away and missing a straight one, while Khizar Hayat virtually saw the game home with a fine cameo batting display for his 16 runs.
Earlier, visitors Wheathampsted - who played the game in the true Spirit of Cricket all evening - had posted 117-2 from their 20 overs; opener Toby Tennant setting the tone with a measured 31 not out before retiring.
All Wheato batters contributed, especially Herbie Wilson who struck a quick-fire 29 before being caught in the deep by captain Pillay off Green's best bowler on the evening Alfie Gaywood-George (three overs, one wicket for just 12 runs).
Shazil Hussain also bowled accurately to give away just nine of his trio of overs, with Pillay taking the only other wicket to fall during the opponent's 20 overs.
Levy, as ever, created a tense finish by taking some time to crawl over the winning line, finally reaching 118 when Hussain helped the ball over square leg off a top edge in the gathering gloom at The Green.
We look forward to the return fixture at Nomansland Common in just over a week's time.
