Leverstock Green Cricket Club Under 14 XI v Harpenden on Sun 23 May 2021 at 2.00pm
Leverstock Green Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs
Match report
DESPITE the weather forecast, Leverstock Green and Harpenden Under-14s managed to fit in a thrilling cricket match for a healthy Sunday afternoon crowd at The Green to enjoy - with the visitors emerging victorious by a margin of just seven runs.
The result was in the balance right throughout Green's chase, having been set 123 to win after Levy captain Lewis Cooper followed the time-honoured juniors tradition of choosing to bowl first.
Alfie Cawley was the pick of the home side's bowling, collecting two wickets for 12 runs from his two overs. One of those was part of a pair of smart stumpings from wicketkeeper Stanley Heritage.
Under-13s were certainly to the fore in the field, with Alfie C taking a good catch and Finlay Rennie also conceding just seven runs from 12 balls.
Harpenden's skipper Arjun Randhawa struck 31 before retiring not out, while Josh Gilham's unbeaten 25 helped Harpenden up to a total of 122-5 from their 20 overs.
In reply, the early wicket of Khizar Hayat didn't fluster the Green top order, with opener Callum Pillay going on to retire after making an excellent 30 not out.
James Craig's marathon vigil at the crease helped keep Levy in with a chance of victory; he saw a brisk 18 from skipper Lewis come and go before finally being caught out in the game's last over for a defiant 20 with Green needing an unlikely 11 to win off skipper Arjun's accurate seam bowling.
This was a game played in excellent spirits with the winners never really confirmed until deep into the last over.
By the looks of some of the talents on display from both sides, there are going to be some very capable senior team cricketers coming through in the next year or so.
We look forward to the return leg at Harpenden in a few weeks' time.
