HERTS LEAGUE ROUND-UP - WEEK 15: May The Force Behind 3s For Amazing Last-Gasp Win

14 Aug 2016

THREE wickets from the game's final three balls earned LGCC 3rd XI an extraordinary one-run victory at home to North Mymms III - with Steve May at the heart of the action in both innings.

'Shotgun' Steve it was who bowled the fixture's final over with Mymms seven wickets down and needing 10 runs for victory. Two fours seemed to have sealed the game's fate but, with just two to win with three balls and three wickets left, May struck twice before a final-ball run-out earned Neil Fleming's 3s a quite incredible 30 points.

Earlier in the afternoon, May's 65 at the top of the Levy order was backed up by 42 from Gareth Tucker and some lower-order contributions from Lewis Glasscoe and Oli Sawyer as Green amassed 227-9 on the return to the 50/50 over format.

A PROMISING eight-over spell of 2-28 from teenager Hasan Ali was the pick of the LGCC 4th XI bowling as Kings Langley IV posted a target of 204-5.

Green skipper Dave Young led the chase in confident mood with 64 but Andy Welch's unbeaten 20 was the next highest score as Levy 4s ended some 28 runs short of their host's score on 176-9.

HARRY STURGESS hit a classy 91 before running himself out as Green 2s ended some 40 runs short of victory at West Herts II.

Supporting knocks of 28 apiece from Mark Landau and Richard Walker also came in vain after a lacklustre display in the first part of the match allowed the hosts to reach 251-6 from their 50 overs - thanks largely to a fine 112 not out from the Stags' Barry Marshall.

Dom Clarke's 3-31 from his 10 overs made it 16 wickets in the last four 2nd XI matches for the seamer, but there was little quality from elsewhere among Green's bowling attack.

However 13 bonus points earned keeps Levy 2s in Herts League Division Five's second place above West Herts II in the table, and therefore three wins - including against table-toppers Parkfield & Headstone - will be good enough for promotion.

ELEVEN bonus points was the best LGCC 1st XI had to show from defeat at home to Division One high-flyer's Ampthill Town.

Green batted first but recorded a below-par score of 192 all out. Lewis Koch hit 54, Kyle Claxton 38 and Abbas Ali 29 but there were few runs from others.

Majid Khan took three of the five Ampthill wickets to fall as the visitors knocked off the runs in little more than 35 overs.
