HERTS LEAGUE ROUND-UP: A 120-Point Treble For The Green

29 Jun 2014

SATURDAY saw a third straight 120-point haul from Leverstock Green's four Herts League teams - an unprecedented feat, according to club president Brian Coulshed.

While the 2s and 3s dominated their games, it was tougher work for the 4s while the 1st XI thriller at St. Margaretsbury went all the way to the match's penultimate ball.

The 2nd XI cemented second spot behind Harpenden III in Division Five with a crushing win over nearest rivals Flitwick II. As usual, the 2s bowled first - and Flitwick crumbled to 63 all out, thanks largely to superb opening spells from Imran Iqbal (5-33) and two-wicket Sam Roberts. Ash Ali and Iqbal both struck 28 to make light work of the run chase.

Knebworth Park 4s were restricted to a rain-reduced 124-9 by the 3s, who saw Connor Church and Stuart Evans hit 58 not out and 36 not out respectively in chasing that score for the loss of just one wicket. Earlier, Brett Baney's long spell yielded four victims and Greg Coulshed snared three in support.

A late concession by Rickmansworth V allowed the 4s to host Datchworth III, who found themselves in a similar position on Thursday night. Thirty-five from David Wilson, 30 from Charlie Cooke and some stoic defensive work by Brian Coulshed got Mark Pearson's side to 146-8 from 35 overs. In reply, wickets were shared around - Cooke's three-for the best effort - as Datchworth ended some 26 runs short.

At the end of a game which looked unlikely even to start due to rain in Stanstead Abbotts, Dave Tyson's 1st XI took top spot from hosts St. Margaretsbury with a dramatic late win. A tremendous 16-over spell from Sam Mazurek (3-50) helped keep the hosts down to 158-6 from their reduced allotment of 40 overs. Lewis Koch (46), Ben Parkes, David Coulshed (43) and Kris Jadeja at the top of the order kept Green in the run chase before some late boundary-hitting brought the target score within 13 runs by the time the last of Levy's 34 overs was to be bowled. Nick Merrett hit the first ball for six before losing his wicket, leaving Abbas Ali and Mazurek - with a four and two from balls four & five - to get the Green home for a thrilling win.

Club Captain's Saturday Star Man:
Fighting off stiff competition from elsewhere, this week's it's 2nd XI powerhouse Imran Iqbal for claiming the top five in the Flitwick II order before hitting a quick-fire 28.
