HERTS LEAGUE ROUND-UP - WEEK 5: 2s Win On Merrett & Chinese Leads 4s Chase

06 Jun 2016

NICK MERRETT'S unbeaten 66 provided the backbone for LGCC 2nd XI's chase of Old Cholmeleians' 128 - and, in doing so, make it five wins from five in Herts League Division 5A.

Abbas Ali helped set up the modest run chase earlier in the day, taking four of the host's wickets for 23 runs from his 9.2 overs. John Mathew and skipper Jamie Wallis also snared two victims apiece as Levy 2's perfect start to the summer continues to be matched by joint-leaders Parkfield & Headstone.

IT was a much more tense triumph for Green 4s away to Boxmoor IV; 14-year-old Josh Price among the heroes as he batted out an over nervelessly to allow Andy Green to hit the winning runs for a one-wicket win.

Andy Welch and James Downes both took three wickets to help restrict the hosts to 146-8 from their 40 overs, with Dave Cardy snaffling the other two to fall.

An opening contribution from stand-in captain Dave Young of 30 got Levy's chase off to a solid start, but it needed the calming influence of Mike Parkes (24) and then Green's unbeaten 26 to earn the 4th XI a valuable 30 points.

WHILE the 4s won in the last over, it was last-over heartbreak for Levy 3s, who set Northchurch II a competitive 177 for victory at Parmiter's School.

The experienced duo of Richard Walker - who hit 57 - and opener Graham Evans (43) led a Green recovery after the hosts found themselves 11-3. Neil Fleming, Steve May and Karl Turner added valuable runs towards the end of an innings which finished at 176 all out.

Turner's 5-40 - including the removal of Church's top three batsmen - provided hope of Green pegging back the chase, but a fine lower-order stand saw the visitors home - despite the best bowling efforts of Walker and Becky Tyson at the death.

LGCC 1s were well short of par in losing by five wickets to Shenley Village at The Green.

Asked to bat first,Nahim Iqbal was the only Levy batsman to make a half-century. His 57 was backed up only by Harry Blagden's 30 from the top-order. A handy 24 not out from Imran Iqbal late on at least gave Green something to bowl at with a score of 187 all out.

Adam Thomas took three of the five Shenley wickets to fall, but the Division One high-flyers cruised home with five wickets and nearly 15 overs to spare.
